If you walk into our room right now you will not be blown away by the amount of color and interesting things on our walls (see previous pictures)...you will be pretty bored and your senses may need a jump start to get going again. The room will be this way when our students enter in one week. Why would we do this to our kids? Why would we make them walk into blank walls and boring desks?
Here is our reasoning, right or wrong: this is their room, not just ours, and if everything is done when they enter how will they feel like they have ownership? It will be up to them to create bulletin boards for all subjects, decide where they will sit, and formulate classroom expectations.
We are not giving our students complete control over everything, there is some guidance in all these areas. But the overall idea is that we are all working together as a team to create a space where we will all be inspired to learn and create.
We'll let you know how things go, maybe we'll do it again next year, maybe we will be creating our own boards. You never know unless you try:)
